More pressure to help the environment

Young volunteers will descend on a Sutton car park to offer their tyre pumping services for a campaign to improve the environment.

The ‘Climate Squad’ run by Global Action Plan’s Youth Volunteering programme, with support from Sutton Council, will pump up car tyres to the correct PSI - a move which could save motorists hundreds of pounds a year. The event, which is hoped to be the first of many, will be held in Times Square multi-storey car park on Saturday 23 October.

Cllr Colin Hall, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change on Sutton Council, said: “This initiative ticks all the right boxes - it doesn’t cost anything, it will help the environment, save motorists money and raises awareness of climate change issues. It also engages young people in a very worth while volunteering project.” Research shows properly inflated tyres can save motorists an average of five to eight per cent on their fuel consumption

Cllr Hall added: “The facts are that we will have to change our behaviour to combat climate change and help the environment. However there are a lot of really simple things we can do to make the process easier, such as checking the tyre pressure on your car. A saving of eight per cent of your car’s fuel may not sound like a lot, but over the course of a year, this is a lot of CO2 and a lot of money.”

Volunteers will be at the car park in Sutton town centre from 11.00am. Motorists will be offered the service free of charge.

The Global Action Plan’s Youth Volunteering programme is funded by charitable foundation, V and the Bank of America.
