Club launch helps residents back to work

Job hunters will now getting extra help finding employment after the launch of new Work Clubs.

People are already signing up to join the support group at the Circle Library, Carshalton.

The project gives people the chance to meet others looking for work, build new contacts, share job hunting experiences and get advice on interview techniques, CVs and even volunteering opportunities to help them find employment.

Led by volunteers from nearby businesses and individuals from within the community, the sessions enable those that attend to receive the best combination of specific guidance and local knowledge.

Anthony Hogg, 46, from Carshalton, who found the launch event at the Circle Library very useful, said: “I worked as a solderer for 12 years but since losing my job I have volunteered at an older people’s home. I’ve done a number of things to try and get back to work, including going on courses and coming today, so I hope something will come up soon.”

After speaking to advisors at the event, Anthony was referred to a manufacturing firm who offered him an interview for a vacancy.

The vision is now to expand across the borough, with additional sessions already planned for Phoenix and Sutton Life Centre libraries.

Cllr Jayne McCoy, Executive Member for Planning, Economic Development and Housing at Sutton Council, said: “Work Clubs offer something different for job seekers by bringing together resources and support from all agencies, local employers and support networks.

“While Sutton has the highest employment rate in London, there are still many people looking for work and we hope that this initiative will make a really big difference.

“The project also shows that there is much more to our libraries than books – at a time when libraries across the country are under threat, we are encouraging their use and proving their worth as a great community facility.”

Partners include Sutton Chamber of Commerce, Scola, Sutton Libraries and local residents.

Sutton’s adult education centre, Scola, will also offer additional training to boost residents’ skills. While Jobcentre Plus will support the initiative by providing advisors who will give advice on where to find vacancies, how to compile CVs and speculative letters, in addition to providing local vacancies.

The Work Club at Circle Library is held weekly between 10am and 12 noon.

Residents’ interested in taking part in the work clubs should contact the Business Gateway on 020 8770 5070.
