H ealth experts have issued an alert about Spanish eggs after discovering a link with salmonella.
The Food Standards Agency has issued the warning after an increase in cases of food poisoning linked to people eating eggs from Spain.
Most cases have been found in the north of England, but officials say the eggs have been found being used by cafes in Sutton and on sale in local shops.
The eggs linked with the illness are stamped 3ES4504734A. Caterers buying boxes of eggs should look out for the code 3ES450470000034A on the packaging.
Cllr Simon Wales, Sutton Council’s Executive Member for Communities, Transport and Voluntary Sector, said: “Caterers and the public are advised to check the code on eggs that they are buying. Salmonella can cause serious illness and I’d advise people to take a safety first attitude.”
Anyone using these eggs should ensure that they are thoroughly cooked. You must also wash your hands thoroughly after touching eggs and disinfect any surface that was touched by the egg. Alternatively, you can return the eggs to your supplier.
Salmonella bacteria are killed by thorough cooking.
Caterers are advised to purchase their eggs from hens that have been accredited as salmonella-free. Vulnerable people, the elderly, infants, pregnant women and those who are already in poor health should avoid eating lightly cooked eggs.
