How are we performing?

Detailed below are some facts and figures relating to our service in recent years.

During 2008/09 total waste disposal fell 20% from at 657 tonnes to 530 tonnes the previous year. (See Figure1) . This fall has come about due to a reduction in tree maintenance activity and greater volumes of green waste (wood chippings) being recycled in our shrub beds, leading to a sharp fall in green waste disposal.   General waste collected by our Bulk Waste team remains at similar levels to the previous year, but the amount collected from garages have fallen while fly tipped waste in communal areas has increased.

If the scheduled bus route collection work is combined with responsive work, then during 2008-09 some 95.8% of all general bulk waste was collected within 5 working days compared to 95.75% in 2007-08 .

The average turnaround time for collecting responsive bulk waste was 8.6 working days in 2008/09 compared to 6 working days in 2007/08 and 8 working days in 2006/07.

Garage clearance site visits fell from 67 in 2007/08 to 10 jobs in 2008/09. This reflects reduced demand following efforts the previous year by the Neighbourhood Teams to re-let empty garage stock (see Figure 3).  Garage Clearance turnaround was 16 calendar days in 2008/09 compared to 24.6 calendar days the previous year. 11 special garden clearances were carried out in 2008/09 and our bulk team worked in collaboration with Neighbourhood Teams to carry out 7 block hallway clearances to tackle nuisance issues.

The average daily collection of general waste.   Monday was the heaviest collection day in 2008/09 averaging 2.2 tonnes compared to the lightest day on Wednesdays at 1.65 tonnes. Each daily round contains a large principal estate for collecting waste where highest volumes of fly tipping occurs. The principal estate on Monday is Shanklin Village. On Thursdays, Durand Close is the principal estate.

Fridges . The annual collection of fridges for 2008/09 was 440 compared to 450 in 2007/ 08 . It has fallen from a high of 757 in 2004/05 when regulations were introduced to control the disposal of fridges (harmful CFC gases). Fridges are collected separately on a ‘fridge run’ normally on Fridays.
