Graffiti Removal

Graffiti removal work to porous surfaces is delivered in-house by a team of mobile Estate Officers on a responsive basis.

The target turnaround time to remove racist or offensive graffiti is 24 hours

The target turnaround time for removing other graffiti is 10 working days

The mobile ‘Graffiti Team’ also assist with larger vandalism to non porous surfaces by for example, painting over graffiti, and in some cases redecorating badly affected blocks or garages where resources are available. The team also carries out other projects including installing and delivering estate fixtures such as bins and jetwashing projects including clearing balconies and cleaning concrete surfaces.  During the summer the team also helped install 'Hanging Baskets' in blocks where residents sought to adopt them.

How are we performing?  Detailed below is some facts and figures about our graffiti removal service.

  • Graffiti shows a continuing decline across our properties. During 2008/09 161 jobs were completed, falling from a high of 315 jobs in 2005/06 representing an approximate fall of 49% in graffiti incidence.
  • Average turnaround for removing graffiti was 10.8 calendar days against a target of 14 calendar days in 2008/09.  This year we have set a more challenging target of 7 calendar days (5 working days) to improve standards further.
  • Of all 161 jobs carried out during 2008/09, 9 were racist and/or vulgar.  Racist/vulgar graffiti has a 24 hour removal target which was attended to on average within 0.66 days. This compares to an average turnaround of 3.7 days in 2007/08, 4 days in 2006/07 and 1.5days in 2005/06.  4 out of the 9 reports of racist/vulgar graffiti were removed within 4 hours of receiving the report.
  • Graffiti ‘hotspots’. Collingwood estate and Rosehill area shows a marked increase in graffiti while the trend at Benhill and Corbet Close is falling.   Unusually Waleton Acres has had a spate of graffiti indicating a growing problem in this area. Identifying these ‘hotspots’ assist our colleagues and partners in targeting resources to carry out preventative action as part of a wider strategy to reduce the incidence of graffiti boroughwide.
