| Equality and Diversity |
Sutton Housing Partnership is committed to meeting the differing needs of all our tenants and leaseholders. We believe that the growing diversity of the borough is a source of strength, and our Equality & Diversity Policy sets out how SHP promotes equality and seeks to prevent discrimination, as an employer and also through the services that we provide.
Sutton is becoming an increasingly diverse borough. In the 1991 census, the borough’s black and minority ethnic population was 5.9%. The 2001 Census showed that the BME population had increased to 10.8% and we are aware that, in the five years since, Sutton has continued to become an increasingly diverse, multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-faith borough.
Sutton Housing Partnership (SHP) provides services to the most disadvantaged sections of the community. Social housing households contain higher than average proportions of people who experience discrimination and other social disadvantage. The main groups include: people from black and minority ethnic (BME) communities; lesbians, gay men, bi-sexual people and people who identify as transgender; households headed by women (especially lone parents); people with disabilities; older people; people with HIV/AIDS; people with learning difficulties; people with mental health issues; people suffering from alcohol or substance abuse; ex-offenders; people in contact with the criminal justice services; those experiencing domestic violence or sexual abuse.
In our Equality & Diversity Policy we set our commitment to be an organisation that:
i. Develops services to achieve equality and diversity in all its activities;
ii. Has a workforce generally reflecting the population;
iii. Understands how valuing diversity can improve our ability to deliver better services;
iv. Actively consults with all our customers to ensure the delivery of our key priorities;
v. Actively consults with different individuals and communities to ensure that services which are provided are responsive and reflect the diversity of need;
vi. Provides all employees with the training and development they need to enable them to achieve organisational goals;
vii. Provides a supportive, open environment where all employees have the opportunity to reach their full potential;
viii. Listens to its customers and involves them in the development of services that recognise and value diversity; and
ix. Believes that both customers and employees have important parts to play in making this happen.
Our Commitment to Equality and Diversity leaflet provides more information about how we are implementing these commitments. Please use the links on the right of this page to access our other Equality & Diversity schemes and leaflets.
