What has happened?
The sheltered housing service delivered by Sutton Housing Partnership has changed to provide a new enhanced service for residents.
- Sheltered Housing Officers working 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday supported by:
- 24 hour response provided by Safecall response centre and Mobile Response Officers
- A call at weekends from Safecall for residents who are housebound and without weekend carers; or for those who are ill and there is concern for their well being over the weekend
The new service has build on the things that residents told us they like about the service:
- Dedicated sheltered housing officers for each site
- More social activities
- Better information about what to expect from the service.
The Role of the Sheltered Housing Officer
The Sheltered Housing Officer is a trained professional who co-ordinates the day-to-day running of the sheltered housing scheme. They work from an office base on site or at a neighbouring scheme.
Sheltered Housing Officers work in partnership with residents, their families and other service providers to maximise the independence of each resident.
The Sheltered Housing Officer will:
- Welcome and introduce new residents to the site and provide a welcome pack giving information about the facilities and services which are available locally
- Maintain regular contact with all residents by intercom call, personal visit or telephone call. The type and frequency of this contact will be discussed and recorded and agreed in an individual support plan
- Assist residents to access services such as Meals on Wheels or Home Care
- Respond to emergencies, call for the necessary assistance and notify relatives if applicable
- Encourage social activities and resident involvement, both within and outside the site
- Provide day to day management of the site
The Sheltered Housing Officer will not:
- Administer drugs or medication of any kind
- Clean, cook or shop for residents (except in the event of an emergency until other agencies or relatives can take over)
- Nurse, bath or assist to bath any resident
- Lift any resident should they have a fall, they will summon assistance from the ambulance service
- Arrange removals, connections or disconnections of gas, electric or telephone services
What happens when the Sheltered Housing Officer is not there?
When the Sheltered Housing Officer is not available, the 24-hour Safecall service answer calls made through the alarm equipment and are able to call on a local team of staff to assist residents. This new team of staff are known as the Safecall Mobile Response Service.
How can I contact Safecall?
Contact can be made with Safecall by pressing a pendant or pulling any of the red cords in individual flats or communal areas: or by pressing the warden’s button on the front door entry phone panel. The contact telephone number for Safecall is 0845 0530866.

What will happen at weekends?
The majority of residents do not receive a call at the weekend. If any resident needs assistance they should press their pendant or pull a cord to contact Safecall.
However for residents who are housebound and do not have home carers at the weekend or for those residents who are ill and there is concern for their welfare over the weekend a check call is available from Safecall. The Sheltered Housing Officer will arrange this.
What about the security of blocks with communal corridors?
An evening security check is carried out at blocks with communal corridors to make sure that windows and doors are closed and that all is well.
So that our residents and other stakeholders know what to expect from the sheltered housing service provided by Sutton Housing Partnership we have developed a set of standards covering the main areas of the service, together with targets.
In developing these standards we have used information provided by sheltered housing residents and other stakeholders about areas of the service that us are particularly important to them.
