Volunteers’ Week 2022: a time to say thank you

We want to thank Jane (pictured) for her massive contribution at the St Helier Community Food Shop at the start of Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June).

Volunteers’ Week takes place from Wednesday 1 June, and is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering.

Getting involved in volunteering provides many benefits; like gaining new skills, knowledge and experience, enhancing a CV, and having an opportunity to meet and make new friends with people from different backgrounds.

Image of Jane stocking food from the fridge Jane has been volunteering at our St Helier Community Food Shop on a Thursday morning for a few months, and has proved to be a real asset for the team working there.

Jane has been actively involved in a variety of tasks including:

  • Helping us with bagging up vegetables
  • Operating the till
  • Supporting residents with their shop, making suggestions for meals that they can try
  • Helping us to start a file of simple recipes from food donated to us which residents can try at home

As well as this, Jane has recently completed her food safety and hygiene certificate, meaning she will soon be involved in preparing meal samples for residents who would like to receive them.

Catherine Charlton, Operations Director at Sutton Housing Partnership, said:

“The St Helier Community Food Shop was opened to support our residents to access affordable food and targeted support.

“Jane has been volunteering with us for a few months now and has helped our team with running the shop while supporting our residents to make informed choices when they come to visit.

“We would like to thank Jane for everything she has done and congratulate her for passing her food safety and hygiene qualification.

“We appreciate the support and dedication she has shown us. Volunteering is beneficial for the individual and community and we are always open to welcoming new volunteers who would like to join us.”
