Please help us stop recycling contamination

bins contaminated with non-recyling

On some of our estate inspections we have discovered that some residents are putting non-recyclable goods in the recycling bin.

Contaminated recycling happens when the wrong items are placed in the recycling bin. This then contaminates the recycling goods and could mean that they all just end up in landfill.

Some items that have been left in recycling bins include household waste in black bags (pictured) and parts of broken furniture.

Recycling really does make a difference. In the UK, recycling saves about 10 to 15 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year (the same as taking 3.5 million cars off the road). It also helps to reduce the costs of waste management in Sutton.

Our caretakers have been working hard to separate the recyclable rubbish from the non-recyclable rubbish to make it easier for the borough's collection crews.

However, this is not part of their weekly duties and takes up a lot of their time that could be spent maintaining other parts of our estates and blocks.

Please help us by ensuring that you only put clean, dry and empty recyclable goods in the recycling bins.
