SHP joins with Newcastle Furniture Service making tenants feel at home

We have partnered with the Newcastle Furniture Service (NFS) to launch the Sutton Tenants Appliance Rental Scheme (STARS).

The scheme aims to help new and existing residents live comfortably in their home, by providing brand new or refurbished furniture and appliances at an affordable weekly cost, which includes cookers, sofas, wardrobes and lots more.

An alternative to sourcing furniture in comparison to some ‘rent-to-own’ high street lenders, the weekly cost of the furniture is added to tenants’ weekly rent charge and can be paid for by Universal Credit or Housing Benefit.

Residents can rent products for as little or as long as they wish, with the NFS arranging for them to be delivered and installed in their homes as part of the package.

Each item of furniture has an equivalent points value and residents currently need to choose a selection of items worth a minimum of 60 points to be eligible for the scheme.

John McMullan, one of our residents in Carshalton (pictured), was the first to participate in the scheme.

Steve Tucker, Managing Director at Sutton Housing Partnership, said:

“We are committed to supporting our residents to live well in their homes, and being able to access affordable furniture is an essential part of improving someone’s standard of living.

“With the cost of living going up, paying for essential household items upfront will be even more difficult for our more vulnerable tenants.

“That’s why we are proud to have collaborated with the Newcastle Furniture Service to deliver the first furniture package to our residents.

“We hope that this incentive will encourage many more residents who are eligible to sign up and receive the support they need.”

Residents can sign up for the STARS scheme by emailing the Community Development team or calling 020 8915 2000.
